The 58th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council will be held in Geneva, Switzerland, from February 24 to April 4, 2025, for six weeks.

Yi Bo, an associate professor of the Law School of Southeast University and a researcher of the Human Rights Research Institute, as a representative of the Chinese Society for Human Rights Studies, a social organization in consultative status with the United Nations, went to the United Nations Palais des Nations to attend a side meeting on the theme of "The impact of unilateral sanctions on access to judicial relief and effective remedies" hosted by Professor Du Han, the Special Rapporteur of the United Nations on the negative impact of unilateral coercive measures, and made a speech, calling for ensuring that judicial relief is not disturbed by unilateral sanctions.

Yi Bo pointed out in his speech that unilateral sanctions have become a major obstacle for companies to obtain judicial remedies, seriously affecting the fairness of the global legal system. He emphasized that sanctioned companies and individuals face issues such as limited legal representation, courts and arbitration institutions refusing to accept cases, and financial restrictions leading to difficulties in paying legal fees in legal proceedings, which result in their legitimate rights and interests not being effectively protected Legal remedies are a fundamental right and cannot be used as a political tool Yi Bo stated that the international community should take measures to ensure that businesses and individuals have equal access to legal support, prevent sanctions from becoming a means of economic coercion, and undermine the global rule of law order.

The meeting discussed that unilateral sanctions are undermining the global rule of law and affecting the judicial remedies of businesses and individuals. The attending experts call on governments, legal institutions, and financial institutions of all countries to take measures to ensure the fairness and autonomy of the legal system, and reduce the interference of sanctions on the legal system.
